Roots of Empathy
Roots of Empathy is a programme designed to develop children’s empathy and social-emotional skills. The programme was initially designed & launched in Canada, but after much research and successful outcomes, it has been rolled out in many different countries. At the heart of the programme, is a class developing a relationship with a baby and his/her carer. The baby comes to visit the class every three weeks, giving the children an opportunity to watch his/her growth and development, hear stories about him/her, discuss topics such as feelings, communication, safety and relate these to their own lives. This academic year, 2019-2020, Senior Infants are the ‘Roots of Empathy’ class, and we owe a debt of gratitude to Clodagh, and her mum Catherine, for their time.
In Ireland, Barnardos is the lead organisation who supports schools and trains instructors to deliver the programme in Irish Primary schools.
